Hello, my name is Asha Taylor!
I am an informative creative, early-career journalist, a writer and artist. Born in Manhattan, NY, and raised in Ellicott City, MD, I have been developing my craft as a writer from a very young age. Through studying the works of the greats including Zora Neale Hurston, Ida B. Wells, my aunt Gwen Ifill, James Baldwin, Bell Hooks, and more I have been inspired to write about life.
As a journalist, it is my civil responsibility to myself and my people for me to tell those untold stories. My dedication to representing groups of people who don’t have a voice is fuelled by my own experiences. I utilize research, conversation, and a watchful eye over my community to write articles that focus on informing the public about the state of the world, how we got here, and what can be done to enact change. My goal, as a reporter, is to use my voice and my power to write the first draft of history and with that responsibility in mind, I plan to use my gift of expression to serve as a beacon for people.
Currently, I am a Howard University student representing the class of 2024. I am majoring in journalism and minoring in English. My work experience includes marketing, sound engineering, cloud and software management, and visual journalism, which I have obtained through various internships, work, and academic opportunities. Soon, I will graduate from my dream university, the HU, where I will continue to pursue a career as an investigative journalist. Following topics such as environmental issues, social justice, culture, health, and art, I am devoted to publishing quality work.
My creative work is fueled by the same principles. I enjoy art, painting, photography, audio engineering, and writing in my free time. I am equally passionate about expressing myself through artistry as I am journalism. I find peace in using my creativity to further understand myself as an individual.
I want to be a role model for other Black women and girls who have ever felt silenced in a world that doesn’t appreciate them. Throughout my life, I struggled with learning how to deal with my emotions because I was raised in a world that didn’t allow me to be anything other than strong. I want to destroy that narrative with my writing, and I want to be an example that a Black woman’s voice, beauty, and graceful being are a threat to society. It is powerful and can break barriers in a way that no one else can. I feel pulled to tell stories surrounding activism and change, which really are the only things that are left in the history books – the events that caused a change.
